STAR Program

Get back on track

The transition to college can be hard. Many academic challenges faced by students early on have to do with adjusting to the rigor of college courses. It happens, which is why we offer the STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) program to University College students who have been reinstated or are on first-time academic review.

This academic success program provides STAR students with volunteer professional staff, student mentors, and academic coaches from across campus who guide and support them in setting realistic and attainable academic and personal goals, recommend campus resources, and address other needs or concerns as they arise.

STAR students meet with their coach or mentor at least 4–5 times a semester for 30-minute sessions. As noted in the academic review and dismissal policy and the reinstatement policy for University College students, participation in STAR or another program such as the Diversity Enrichment and Achievement Program (DEAP), 21st Century Scholars Success Program, or TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is mandatory to ensure your academic success in college.

My first reaction was one of defiance, but then I thought, ‘It can’t hurt.’ I had little idea how much it would come to help me...With my mentor, I realized I had someone at school I could communicate with and help keep me committed to my goals.
