You may wonder why someone would change their major. Common reasons include if you:
- Learn that another major is a better pathway toward your intended career.
- Participate in a hands-on learning experiences outside your current major, and it sparks new career aspirations.
- Find other majors that better align with your goals.
- Notice differences in how you feel taking courses for your current major versus new interests.
- Explore new majors if you don't get accepted to your first choice. This can lead to exciting new opportunities!
When and how you change your major are important. To ensure you complete your degree in a timely manner, you should make an informed decision and declare a major by the time you earn 30 credits.
There are pros and cons to changing your major in college. Changing it may support your academic success and allow you to pursue a career that you have more interest in. However, changing your major several times or during your junior or senior year may prolong the time it takes to earn your degree.

To update your major, minor, certificate, or pre-professional interest, complete the form below. Note that you can only update your major once per semester. If you’ve already changed it once in a semester, meet with your academic advisor to discuss your educational goals and to request an additional update. This process is only for enrolled University College students at IU Indianapolis.
