Transition to Degree

University College: Your launchpad to degree

When you graduate from college, you earn a degree. At IU Indianapolis, we have two types of schools:

  • degree-granting schools
  • colleges that support and enrich your academic experience but do not grant degrees

University College does not grant degrees. We serve as your launchpad, and we support you through the start of college to your transition into your degree-granting school, from which you’ll graduate.

Nearly half of all new IU Indy students begin in University College as a pre-major or Exploratory student. While in University College, you’ll work toward meeting the admission requirements of your degree-granting school. Our goal is to help you transition to your program before you reach junior standing, defined as 60 or more earned credit hours. Most students move into their degree-granting school by the end of their first year.

Pathways to transition

Exactly how you transition to your degree-granting school depends on your program, but there are two common pathways to transition.

Certification

Many schools simply require that you meet a set of minimum criteria such as obtaining a certain GPA or completing introductory classes. In these cases, you do not have to apply to your program—you will “certify” into the program.

Application

Some schools require you to apply for your intended program, and many of these programs are highly competitive. Our goal is to help you gain admission to the degree-granting school of your choice . We’ll also help you with parallel planning should you change course.

Tips for a successful transition

  • Know your program’s admission criteria. Search our major tool to find yours.
  • Understand whether you’ll transition through certification or application.
  • Work with your advisor to develop your transition plan.

Celebrate earning your spot

It’s a big deal when you are accepted or certified into your degree program! That’s why we celebrate this milestone each semester with a special event.
