Steps for Dismissed Students

What to do now

IU Indianapolis and University College require that we follow the dismissal policy and procedures. Read this information carefully, and complete your next steps.

Registration and financial information

  • If you are registered for the spring 2025 semester, we will inform the Office of the Registrar to remove you from all classes no later than Friday, January 10, 2025. You will not be charged tuition and fees for your spring classes.
  • The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will be notified of your dismissal.  Because of your dismissal status, it is your legal responsibility to return all disbursed aid you may have received for the spring semester. NOTE: Contact finaid@iu.edu or call 317-274-4162 to discuss your options for returning any aid you may have received for spring classes.

Campus housing information

  • If you currently have a contract with Housing and Residence Life, you must contact them as soon as possible regarding your dismissal status. Connect with Housing.

Your options for returning

The dismissal policy requires that students who are dismissed for the first time must sit out for a minimum of one regular (fall or spring) semester and petition by the established deadlines to be eligible for reinstatement. Reinstatement is not automatic, and reinstatement for the summer semester is not an option.

Petition for reinstatement after taking time off

  • Once you have taken the required time off (a minimum of one regular semester for a first dismissal), you will be eligible to submit a petition for reinstatement for the fall or spring semester. Reinstatement for the summer semester is not an option.
  • Please visit our reinstatement page for additional information about reinstatement, and learn how to petition to return when you are eligible.

Submit an immediate reinstatement appeal

  • If you feel you had specific extenuating circumstances during the fall that contributed to your dismissal status, appealing the decision is an option. Extenuating circumstances include the following:
    • Medical or mental health reasons: Official documentation on letterhead from your health care provider, hospital, family doctor, or counselor is required. NOTE: We do not need to know the specific reason(s), only an indication from your health care provider indicating the period during the semester you were under in professional care.
    • Extenuating circumstances DO NOT INCLUDE any reasons other than medical or mental health issues.
  • If you cannot provide documentation by the appeal deadline of 12 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, your appeal will not be reviewed, and the dismissal will be final.
  • There are many factors we take into consideration, even with documentation, that may provide us with additional reasons for approving or denying your appeal.
  • It is extremely rare that we will approve an immediate reinstatement appeal. A second dismissal requires remaining out for a minimum of two semesters.

If you had extenuating circumstances and would like to appeal, complete the immediate reinstatement appeal form no later than 12 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025.

When you are eligible and ready, we hope you will consider returning to IU Indianapolis. If you have questions concerning any of the information on this site, please contact us at REINSTAT@iu.edu.
