Graduates of the IU School of Social Work go on to promote social and economic justice at every level—from providing for the well-being of others to shaping social and economic policies. Since 1911, the school has been dedicated to developing competent, caring professionals who are qualified to assume leadership roles in social work practice and who strive to enrich the lives of the people they touch. The Council on Social Work Education accredits the Master of Social Work program at Indiana University (continuously since 1923). Whether you want to begin a career in social work or are preparing for an advanced leadership role in practice, research, or policy development, the IU School of Social Work sets the standards for innovative and inspired social work education. In addition to social work, the school also serves as the home of the university's Labor Studies Program. With more than 60 years of leadership in the field of labor studies and labor education, Indiana University continues to pioneer innovative and quality educational opportunities in this field.
Employment of social workers is projected to grow 7% from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. About 67,300 openings for social workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2024).
According to the IUPUI (now called IU Indianapolis) First Destination Survey in 2023, the average starting salary reported for School of Social Work graduates was $40,421, and the median was $40,000.
The national median annual salary for social workers was $58,380 in 2023 ( Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Human beings are social animals. Much of what we think, say, and do is influenced by what others expect of us and by how others treat us. In this program, you’ll study the patterns of interaction between people in all sorts of settings to clarify what behaviors you see, why those behaviors are happening, their effects, and what might be done differently.

Human beings are social animals. We live in groups and do most things with other people. Much of what we think, say, and do is influenced by what others expect of us and by how others treat us. Sociologists study the patterns of interaction between people in all sorts of settings—at work, at play, at home, etc. They try to clarify what is going on, what lies behind it, what is likely to come from it, and what might be done differently. Their theories and research findings can provide insights into processes and events that affect our everyday lives. Perhaps you have wondered why some families get along fine while others seem mired in problems, why some people get involved in criminal careers while others resist temptations, why some companies are much more productive than others, or why some governmental programs succeed while others backfire. These are the kinds of issues sociologists look into in systematic ways.
Employment of sociologists is projected to grow 7% from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. About 300 openings for sociologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook , 2024).
