Students in this major are those interested in teaching social studies to grades 5–12. You’ll learn to teach at diverse schools, taking on an anti-racist stance in your classroom. Be prepared to do more than teach, promoting social change in your school and amongst your students.
The IU School of Education at IU Indianapolis prepares exemplary teachers for today's and tomorrow's diverse schools. Once admitted, students remain together throughout their professional education experiences, including student teaching. The program requires students to take their professional education courses in a specific sequence. However, although not recommended, students may interrupt their study if the need arises.
Employment of high school teachers is projected to decline 1% from 2023 to 2033. Despite declining employment, about 64,000 openings for high school teachers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2024).
According to the IUPUI (now called IU Indianapolis) First Destination Survey in 2021, the average starting salary reported for School of Education graduates was $41,859, and the median salary was $42,830.
The national median annual salary for high school teachers was $65,220 in 2023 ( Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Graduates of the IU School of Social Work go on to promote social and economic justice at every level—from providing for the well-being of others to shaping social and economic policies. Since 1911, the school has been dedicated to developing competent, caring professionals who are qualified to assume leadership roles in social work practice and who strive to enrich the lives of the people they touch. The Council on Social Work Education accredits the Master of Social Work program at Indiana University (continuously since 1923).
Whether you want to begin a career in social work or are preparing for an advanced leadership role in practice, research, or policy development, the IU School of Social Work sets the standards for innovative and inspired social work education. In addition to social work, the school also serves as the home of the university's Labor Studies Program. Social Workers for Social Justice equips social work degree-seeking students for social work practice rooted in social justice.
The School of Social Work Student Outreach Clinic is a student-led free clinic where social work students provide social services to patients on the near eastside of Indianapolis.

In this program, you’ll study the patterns of interaction between people in all sorts of settings to clarify what behaviors you see, why those behaviors are happening, their effects, and what might be done differently.

Sociologists study the patterns of interaction between people in all sorts of settings—at work, at play, at home, etc. They try to clarify what is going on, what lies behind it, what is likely to come from it, and what might be done differently. Their theories and research findings can provide insights into processes and events that affect our everyday lives.
Perhaps you have wondered why some families get along fine while others seem mired in problems, why some people get involved in criminal careers while others resist temptations, why some companies are much more productive than others, or why some governmental programs succeed while others backfire. These are the kinds of issues sociologists look into in systematic ways.

About 300 openings for sociologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Achieve proficiency in the Spanish language and develop an understanding of and appreciation for the wide range of Hispanic cultural, literary, and linguistic manifestations. The Spanish program offers introductory and advanced instruction in language, linguistics, culture and civilization, literature, and applied language studies.
The Spanish program at IU Indianapolis assists students in achieving proficiency in the Spanish language and helps them develop an understanding of and appreciation for the wide range of Hispanic cultural, literary, and linguistic manifestations. The Spanish program offers introductory and advanced instruction in language, linguistics, culture and civilization, literature, and applied language studies.
Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 2% from 2023 to 2033, slower than the average for all occupations. About 7,500 openings for interpreters and translators are projected each year, on average, over the decade. This program will prepare you to become a design leader who uses innovative thinking to improve the quality of business, government, and everyday life.
The Visual Communication Design program at the Herron School of Art and Design combines communication and technology with art and business. You learn how to effectively identify and solve meaningful problems using creativity and critical thinking. You discuss relevant theories and undertake real-world practical projects. You invent beautiful and intelligent design concepts that engage, provoke, and inspire. You gain valuable experience working collaboratively with artists, designers, writers, research experts, business strategists, and clients in our local and national communities. At Herron School of Art and Design, you grow to become a design leader who uses innovative thinking to improve the quality of business, government, and everyday life.

Despite limited employment growth, about 21,100 openings for graphic designers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.
