Journalism and public relations students at IU Indianapolis learn communication skills, research and analytical techniques, technical know-how, teamwork, and versatility—exactly the skills that today’s employers are looking for. Our downtown Indianapolis location provides a valuable pool of leading media professionals who serve as instructors and guest speakers. Internships and jobs covering many possible career paths—media, sports or health information, nonprofits, government, and more—are a short walk or drive away.
Employment of new analysts, reporters, and journalists is projected to decline 3% from 2022 to 2032. Despite declining employment, about 6,000 openings for news analysts, reporters, and journalists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2023).
According to the IUPUI (now called IU Indianapolis) First Destination Survey in 2023, the average starting salary for School of Liberal Arts graduates was $50,036, and the median salary was $47,840 .
The national median annual salary for news analysts, reporters, and journalists was $57,500 in 2023 ( Occupational Outlook Handbook).

The law program in the School of Liberal Arts trains and prepares students for careers as paralegals in the legal profession.
The program provides students with practical legal skills as well as a background in legal concepts so graduates will be able to obtain jobs quickly in this rapidly expanding profession. Paralegals are typically employed in law firms and are also eligible for careers in government, business, and nonprofit organizations.
Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 4% from 2022 to 2032, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 38,000 openings for paralegals and legal assistants are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2023).

Learn how to produce materials like websites, smartphone apps, interactive education materials, games and simulations, 3D motion graphics, and more with this degree. You’ll develop your skills by combining creativity, digital storytelling, problem analysis, and concept mastery.
The focus of the media arts and science program is on creativity and digital storytelling while enhancing contemporary career-building skills. Our program offers education and experience on various integrated media venues in today’s convergent society. We strive to produce dynamic websites, smartphone apps, interactive education, serious and entertaining games and simulations, 3-D motion graphics, digital illustrations and animations, audio, and video.
Employment of special effects artists and animators is projected to grow 8% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. About 9,400 openings for special effects artists and animators are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as retirement ( Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2023).

Technological advances come rapidly in the computer field, so continued study is necessary to remain competitive. Graduate work in a data-focused program, computer science, information systems, business (M.B.A.), or ongoing education in a specific industry area would be appropriate.

Engage in making music with technology, performing, composing, and producing digital-music-formatted materials. Gain a background in music theory, history, research, keyboard, aural training, music technology, and music ensemble to create an appealing resume and portfolio upon graduation.
Music technology students engage in making music with technology, performing, composing, and producing digital music formatted materials. Students study musicianship during the first two years of the degree program, which combines music theory, history, keyboard, aural training, and music technology. Students participate in music ensembles and applied music lessons each semester that they are enrolled (8 credit hours total). The degree is designed as a four-year course of study.
